Barrett Abel grew up in Northern California where he attended Union Mine High School. He started wrestling at 8 years old and won multiple CA Freestyle and Greco youth state championships along the way. At Union Mine he placed at the High School state tournament both times he qualified, culminating in a second place finish his senior year. In college, Barrett was a 4x Division 1 letter winner in the PAC-10 conference. He attended UC Daivs for his first 4 years (including a redshirt) where he was a team captain, PAC-10 conference champion and Outstanding wrestler on the team for the 2010 season. Between the 2010 and 2011 season, UC Davis dropped their wrestling team which led to him transferring to compete for Cal Poly, another team in the same conference. Barrett was a team captain at Cal Poly where he eclipsed 30 wins in the regular season and received a top 12 seed in the NCAA tournament for a second time. Outside of his collegiate career Barrett has competed in wrestling in over 15 states, spent time training at the olympic training center in Ukraine, and has coached the Argentine women’s national team in Buenos Aires. Barrett has a Bachelor’s degree in Economics from UC Davis where he also studied Sport Psychology. In 2018 he relocated to Austin Texas where he now lives with his soon-to-be wife, Lianna.
